Prince Philip visits gym
Wednesday, 30 May 2012
YOUNG boxers were thrilled to play host to Prince Philip when he visited their youth club.
The Duke of Edinburgh first visited the Bromley and Downham Youth Club on the Downham Estate more than 40 years ago.
And he delighted kids at the Valeswood Road club when he returned on Tuesday.
The Duke officially opened the new facilities at the Golden Jubilee Hall, which include a purpose-built boxing area with two rings, gym and changing facilities.
As well as a successful boxing set-up, the club offers a range of activities including arts and crafts, computer studies, trampolining, table tennis, football and softball.
Trustee Mark Morris, said: “It was a lovely day and the Duke spent a long time chatting with the children. “Hilary and Philip Cheverton, who are heavily involved with the club, were doing some research on its history and came across some cuttings showing the Duke had visited in 1971. “They decided to ask if he would like to come back – and surprise, surprise, he did.”
