The £145m cancer care revolution

Wednesday, 25 April 2012

A £145million cancer care “centre of excellence” is to be created – bringing together the work of our three major hospitals.

The hub will be built in the grounds of Guy’s Hospital, in Grate Maze Pond, London Bridge, and will allow patients to get treatment closer to home.

The number of patients being given radiotherapy at Guy’s will rise from 47,000 to 80,000.

Treatment is currently provided at different locations within St Thomas’ in Waterloo, Guy’s and King’s College Hospital, Denmark Hill.

Work is due to start in January next year, with the building expected to open in early 2016.

It will be funded by the three hospitals, charity donations and income from a private patients’ ward.

A Guy’s spokesman said: “Everything will be under the same roof and people will not have to drive back and forth to get the treatment.

“The centre will attract world-class clinical staff and researchers, and the community will benefit from access to world-class cancer care, which will provide the latest treatments and drug regimes.”

The unit will also include a dedicated research centre, which will be run by King’s College London.

It is anticipated that a large number of patients will have the chance to take part in clinical trials while they are receiving treatment.

Another feature of the centre will be a “chemotherapy village”, with communal areas for people recovering and private areas for treatment.

The centre will also have cycle parking for patients and staff.

The hospital is asking patients and residents to give staff feedback on the plans.

The proposals will be on display to the public until Sunday at the second atrium at Guy’s Hospital, where feedback slips have been provided.

The plans will also be on show St Thomas’ Hospital, in Westminster Bridge Road, from Thursday until Sunday of next week.
